Effect of chirality on buckling behavior of single-walled carbon nanotubes

چکیده
In this paper, molecular dynamics simulations MDS are performed on single-walled carbon nanotubes SWCNTs in order to study the effects of chirality on their buckling behavior under axial compression. In the MDS, the Tersoff-Brenner potential is used to describe the interaction of carbon atoms in the SWCNTs. The sensitivity of the buckling strains and buckling modes with respect to the chirality of SWCNT is investigated by modeling SWCNTs with different chiral angles, varying from 0° to 30°, but keeping the length-to-diameter ratio constant. The carbon nanotubes are also analyzed using a continuum cylindrical shell model based on the theory of nonlocal elasticity so as to assess its validity in predicting the buckling strains when compared with the results that are obtained by MDS. The differences between the buckling strains at the continuum scale and that at the nanoscale are also studied. The present analysis and results are helpful in understanding the buckling behaviors of axially compressed carbon nanotubes. This knowledge is important for the application of carbon nanotubes as building blocks of nanomechanical devices. © 2006 American Institute of Physics. DOI: 10.1063/1.2355433

Effect of Topological Defects on Buckling Behavior of Single-walled Carbon Nanotube
Molecular dynamic simulation method has been employed to consider the critical buckling force, pressure, and strain of pristine and defected single-walled carbon nanotube (SWCNT) under axial compression. Effects of length, radius, chirality, Stone-Wales (SW) defect, and single vacancy (SV) defect on buckling behavior of SWCNTs have been studied. Obtained results indicate that axial stability of...

In this paper, the stability characteristics of single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) under the action of axial load are investigated. To this end, a nonlocal Flügge shell model is developed to accommodate the small length scale effects. The analytical Rayleigh-Ritz method with beam functions is applied to the variational statement derived from the Flügge-type buckling equations. Molecular dy...
متن کاملCoupled Axial-Radial Vibration of Single-Walled Carbon Nanotubes Via Doublet Mechanics
This paper investigates the coupled axial-radial (CAR) vibration of single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) based on doublet mechanics (DM) with a scale parameter. Two coupled forth order partial differential equations that govern the CAR vibration of SWCNTs are derived. It is the first time that DM is used to model the CAR vibration of SWCNTs. To obtain the natural frequency and dynamic respon...

متن کاملOn the Mechanical Properties of Chiral Carbon Nanotubes
Carbon nanotubes (CNTs) are specific structures with valuable characteristics. In general, the structure of each nanotube is defined by a unique chiral vector. In this paper, different structures of short single-walled CNTs are simulated and their mechanical properties are determined using finite element method. For this aim, a simple algorithm is presented which is able to model the geometry o...
